This entry is part 3 of 6 in B2 - Keep on the Borderlands

Before leaving the Caves of Chaos and heading back to the Keep, the party suddenly remembered to loot the kobold bodies.

Kay: Now the dwarf can get some honey mead!
DM: It cost a gold. You still don’t have a enough.
Doltoran: Argh!

Once at the keep they stocked up on torches (5 per character!), purchased sleeping arrangements in the common room of the inn and headed to the tavern to see what they could buy with the handful of silver coins they had left.

Kay: Just a small beer?
DM: Well, you could get Bark Tea, a bowl of Pudding, Soup, or some Fruit.
Kay: Ugh. The dwarf will settle for the small beer. How small is it?

The barkeep brought over a mug smaller than his large hands and dropped it on the table. It looked like a single dwarf gulp to Doltoran.

Barkeep: You lot exploring the caves out there? You know, I hear that all of the cave entrances are trapped.

I wanted to use the rumor table on page 9 and since there was 20 of them, I figured they could each hear a rumor from the barkeep randomly by letting them roll a d20. They would receive one rumor per day, per drink, the dwarf being allowed two.

The girls did not immediately go for it, since they only had a few silver left, but the dwarf changed his mind over night when he went back to the tavern for his morning drink.

Barkeep: Stay away from the Vast Swamp. Lizardmen live in there.

Sitting across from Doltoran was Len and Selenor who nodded in confirmation, making it clear this was true.

Kay: They aren’t all true?
DM: They’re rumors. He’s not lying to you. It’s just things he’s heard.
Doltoran: Another!
Barkeep: An elf once disappeared in that very swamp, you know.
Doltoran: Who cares about a lost elf!

Doltoran left the tavern grumbling about wasted coin as he met up with the others to head back to the Caves of Chaos.

Back to Cave A

The elf cleric Delurith held aloft a burning torch as the halfling thief Shadow discovered a pit trap in the T-Junction. Going around the edges the party made their way closer to a strong smell of rot and decay. Entering a larger portion of the cave thirty-six red eyes reflected back the torchlight, some of the giant rats standing up on two legs hissing as the majority of them rushed to swarm the party.

Sue: Eighteen? We only faced five giant rats on our first adventure!
DM: Actually it was four.
Sue: Whatever.

Weapons raised, the two front warriors prepared for the oncoming rodent swarm as the thief took to the shadows, the cleric in the rear drawing her short bow.
