In Medias Res

This entry is part 2 of 6 in TD1α – Origins

Monster&TreasureThe halfling stood before the oaken door, tilting her head as she examined the lock for any poison needle traps. Satisfied, she reached into her pack, pulled out a set of thieves’ tools and began to make short work of the mechanism inside the ancient door’s lock.

Kay: What’s inside?

Elsewhere, with the weight of the damp air around her, the elven cleric of Ehlonna raised her bow and notched another arrow. She was cautiously ready for more goblins. Beside the priest, an armored female half-elf twisted and then pulled her spear out of a greenskin that was lying face down in a pool of black ichor.

They both glanced around the musty hall littered with goblin corpses.

In unison, “Where’s the halfling?”

Tess: Kay, stop going ahead of the group! There are probably more goblins in there.

With the door now unlocked, the small thief placed one foot against the stone wall and yanked on the rusted pull ring.

Kay: Or treasure!

Ladies of the Dinner Table

Cuttlefish PendantKay is the youngest at the age of 9. We typically play a lot of co-op focused games together, Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light being one of our current favorites and we had a blast with Dragon Quest IX. She is always good to go when it comes to playing games and watching movies.

Sue is the older sister at 12. She usually has her face buried in a book and enjoys writing her own material. She has always been invited to join us, but she tends to keep to herself more. One thing we have in common is our love for sushi. Whenever the opportunity arises, we ditch the others to get our fill of raw fish.

Tess, their mom, has more in common with Sue. That is to say, she needs convincing when it comes to participating with us. In her spare time, she enjoys writing as well and would rather be playing a solo game on her laptop than be bothered with jumping in on a LAN game or watching the latest horrible film I believe everyone must see.

I have written a longer piece on my personal RPG history in the about section, but it is not required reading. It is enough to simply state that I am the only one of the group that has role played in the past. Until now.

Tess was not present for our first session; Kay and Sue would embark on their first adventure without her, but eventually we would all be delving into the world of Dungeons & Dragons.

Thanks, Runeslinger. The girls make it easier on me, since they provide me with so much material to write about in the first place.

    Regardless, I appreciate the compliment.
