The girls took a left and avoided the cavern stairs leading up on the right.
DM: Smoke is running across the ceiling of the rock hewn passage. It’s coming out of a larger cave near the end where you can hear the crackling of fire and see the flickering of light.
Sue: We go in. Fighters in front, weapons drawn.
Three bugbears sat around a brazier. A spit of meat roasting over the fire and nearby was a gong. Caught by surprise, they looked dumbfounded as the two Fighters rushed the large hairy beasts.
They knocked two of the bugbears down. Torana sliced one of their stomachs open; their entrails spilled out like wet rope. The elf let two arrows fly, one shaft landing in the upper arm of a bugbear, the other piercing the back of their new companion Torana.
Sue: Damn. 7 damage. Sorry.
Kay: Well, she has 1 hit point left.
“Sanare Vulnera Kevua,” the Cleric prayed, healing the female Fighter she just injured.
Blows were exchanged between the two groups, until only one remained. Desperate, it headed for the gong. The elf dropped him with two arrows; the bugbear fell inches away from the metal disc.
Taokith began looting the bodies, the others taking a cue from him as they began to search the room.
Sue: Gold! Finally!
DM: No one wants to try the meat?
Sue: No way.
Kay: Who knows what they were cooking.
Sue: Coming from the person that eats rat meat.
Kay: Hmpf. Let’s try the stairs.
Sue: Okay. I think we can do one more room, before we should head back to the Keep.
The four gathered around the top of the cave stairs, their torchlight flickered across the walls of the passage they now stared down. Twenty feet down to the left of the cavernous hallway was a choice on the left. Thirty feet where the natural rock hallway ended was another way going right.
Sue: Let’s check out the left passage.
DM: Ten feet down that way is a crude door, that looks like it was shoddily put together. It doesn’t seem like it would keep out a draft or noise.
Sue: Let’s just kick it down.
Kay: I’m ready.
Looking over the module, while writing this up, I realized I fucked up on this part. I knew we would need to wrap things up in about 40 minutes or so for dinner. I was not trying to make the encounter easier, but when I skimmed the 36. Chieftan’s Room entry I saw “bugbear,”"large as an ogre,” and then “she.” I thought that I had read it was male, but just moved along with the encounter. It turns out I had read “male” and just missed that there was a male and female.
In my eagerness to end before the dinner bell, the bugbear chieftain became a large hairy beast with huge tits that now had two of Shadow’s arrows sticking out of the left breast as it lay dead on the cave room floor. A third arrow was lodged in the brain, the shaft having found its way there through the throat.
An 18 and two 20s.
