The wind rustled the canopy of broad-leaved branches above them as the two spent some time foraging, while keeping an eye out for any woad for Starlight’s hair.
The sun was setting and the shadows grew long in the hardwood forest.
After their small meal of nuts and berries, they decided to spend the night in the gnarled bough of a young oak tree hidden amongst some hickory.
DM: Wait, what?
Sue: I’m not sleeping on the wet ground with all the bugs hiding in the underbrush.
They both made successful dexterity checks to determine if they fell out of the tree during the night.
The following morning they had a small breakfast, eating the left over nuts and berries they had gathered the previous day. They then headed towards the location of the tower.
Their first combat encounter was with four giant rats. Classic. With a crash course in THAC0, the two of them stood side by side to face the large rodents, which had made their home in the ruins of the shattered tower built alongside a hill in the forest.
Alina launched her spear, skewering the final beast, its body dropping limp in the dead leaves and broken stones, which were scattered around the floor of the open ruin.
Kay: I want to cut them up for meat.
Starlight went to work with her dagger on the dead rats, while Alina gathered some of the smaller bits of fallen timber inside the ruined tower to make a fire.
Spitting the meat on thick branches the halfling roasted the cut portions, while the half-elf turned up a smug nose.
Sue: You’re seriously going to eat rat meat?
Kay: We can share it.
Sue: Uh, no, thank you.
After the halfling sated her hunger with second breakfast, she stuffed her pack with leftovers.
